Why The Galaxy Fold Special Edition Is Selling Fast

It's only available in South Korea, but Tom got to try one.
1

Hello folks,

I know some of you have said you're enjoying the traveling stories I've been including, and one I wanted to get to crosses over with the news, so I'm making it the big story. I got a look at the Samsung Special Edition while here in Seoul, and the big news is that it sold out fast. But it's only available in South Korea, so I'll give a little of my hands-on insight.

Tomorrow, I'll follow up on some more VPN weirdness I experienced and a little on how I've managed power and charging. Thursday, Jason Howell is back guest hosting the newsletter, and then Friday I'll be back in the US. We'll see how much I can get out that morning, but it will be at least as much as I've been doing on the road.

Thanks everyone for your understanding while I've been traveling.

Cheers,

Tom

PS - To help y’all cope with the day’s stress, I’m making this one free for everyone. Pass it along!

Big Story

Samsung has been selling its

Special Edition of the Galaxy Z Fold in South Korea only. The phone sold out in ten minutes when it first went on sale. Yesterday, they put up another round, which also sold out in five minutes. The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is thinner with larger screens on both the cover and interior display. It also comes with 16 GB of RAM instead of 12 as well as WiFi 7 instead of 6E. But mostly it's about that thinness and the screen size.

I looked at one in the Samsung department at the Hyundai Department Store in Gangnam this week. The thinness was the first thing I noticed. It's really compact. And the closest thing to a non-foldable I've seen yet, though I haven't personally picked up most of the Chinese models. The screens did not immediately appear bigger to me, but knowing they were, I could see that it was. They're still that taller aspect ratio that people seem to like. Otherwise, it was a fast and good-looking screen, and the crease was barely noticeable. South Korea is full of Samsung fans (and some iPhone fans too), so it's not surprising that they went for the new improved model. I'm curious if Samsung will try it outside its own borders if the cost of goods isn't quite ready for export yet.

Amazon launched "X-Ray Recaps" Monday, which automatically generates text summaries of entire seasons of TV shows on Prime Video. From the detail page of a show in Prime Video, you can select the rewind icon and choose from a recap of the current episode, the season so far, or a previous season. The feature is live in the US for Fire TV users on MGM Studios' original titles.

The model was trained on video, subtitles, and dialogue from the shows. It takes into account where you are in your watching to give you a summary that doesn't spoil episodes you haven't watched.

The beta of iOS 18.2 now has a section in settings that shows a daily limit on your use of ChatGPT's full version. After you reach the limit, your requests get downgraded to a more basic version of the model, or you can upgrade to a paid version of ChatGPT Plus to raise the limit. If you already pay for ChatGPT+, you can sign in from settings to authenticate and raise the limit.

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission determined that from July 2018 to March 2022, Meta unlawfully collected sensitive information about around 980,000 Facebook users, including their religion, political views, and whether they were in same-sex unions. This data was collected by analyzing what pages users liked or clicked on. It also shared such data with around 4,000 advertisers. The commission fined Meta 21.6 billion won ($15 million).

Indonesia has banned the iPhone 16 and the Pixel 9 because it says Apple and Google have not met local content rules. That means either using local companies to build a portion of the phones or investing money to meet the equivalent. It looks like Apple is planning to meet the requirement by investing $10 million in local companies, including establishing a factory near Jakarta to produce accessories and components for Apple devices.
