TOM: This is the Daily Tech News for Thursday, August 28, 2025. We tell you what you need to know, follow up on the context of those stories, and help each other understand.
HUYEN: Today, Andy Beach tells us why Meta bought an emotional speech startup and Copilot is coming to Samsung TVs, and y’all are NOT pleased.
I’m Tom Merritt,
I’m Huyen Tue Dao
TOM: Let’s start with what you need to know with the big story.

Samsung makes good on promise to bring Microsoft Copilot to TVs
Samsung Brings Microsoft Copilot to 2025 TVs and Monitors, Unlocking Smarter On-Screen Experiences – Samsung Newsroom Malaysia

A smarter way to talk to your TV: Microsoft Copilot launches on Samsung TVs and monitors | Microsoft Copilot Blog
Microsoft’s Copilot AI is now inside Samsung TVs and monitors : r/DailyTechNewsShow
TOM: Samsung announced it will incorporate Microsoft Copilot into the Samsung Vision AI experience on its 2025 TVs and monitors in the homescreen, Samsung Daily Plus, and Click to Search. When you use voice commands or select it on the remote, the little blob Microsoft showed off last month shows up and answers your questions. Search results will be improved because they can be based on what the model knows about your viewing habits, and even previous conversations if you sign in to the Copilot app with your Microsoft login. It can also answer questions about what you're viewing, like actors, athletes, or plot summaries. And Samsung promises it can "support foreign language learning or help break down complex concepts." Samsung TVs also have a lifestyle hub where you'll be able to talk to Copilot about food, wellness and other topics beyond entertainment. LG is also bringing Copilot to its TVs.
Samsung said it should show up soon on 2025 versions of its Micro RGB, Neo QLED, OLED TVs, The Frame Pro, and The Frame models, as well as the M7, M8, and M9 smart monitors.
This continues the pushback of Google Assistant on TVs. Samsung uses its own Tizen OS and LG uses its own WebOS. While they could use Assistant or add Gemini, which is what Google would like, they've chosen to strike deals with Microsoft instead.
The folks on our DTNS Subreddit laid into this with comments like "Did someone ask for this?" "Needs Blockchain" "Boo" and "I want off this ride."
So, Huyen is it because it's Microsoft, or is it just negativity toward chatbots that makes people hate?
HUYEN: DTNS is made possible by you the listener. Thanks to

DJI's much smaller Mic 3 can record four subjects at once
HUYEN: DJI released the DJI Mic 3, which is smaller and lighter at 16 grams, vs. the 28 grams of the Mic 2. It also adds a rotating clip along with the magnetic option for mounting the transmitter. You also get five colors of windscreen, so it stands out less from clothing. Which, of course, is undermined by the huge DJI logo on both sides. The charging case can also accommodate the transmitter with the mount and windscreen still attached. The transmitters can go 8 hours on a charge, and the receiver 10 hours, and the case can charge them up about 2.4 times before it needs a recharge. The range is estimated at 400 meters. If you buy multiple kits, you can support four transmitters and eight receivers at once, so 4 people and 8 cameras at a time. It also supports Sony's 4-channel quadraphonic sound. And there are two sound modes, Automatic, for suppressing bursts of noise, like wind, and Dynamic Mode, which evens out the volume in real-time. It also has three voice tone presets and two active noise cancellation levels. The one big thing DJI took away is a 3.5mm mic port on the transmitter, so you can't use your own mics. It's on sale now for $329 for a receiver and two transmitters for $219 if you just need one transmitter and receiver.
Nvidia (NVDA) earnings report Q2 2026
Nvidia Can’t Pay US 15% Unless Trump’s Plan Formalized, CFO Says - Bloomberg
Nvidia Joins Google to Fund Commonwealth’s Fusion Power Plant - Bloomberg
Nvidia Predicts Cooler Growth After Sales Record - WSJ
In case you were worried, Nvidia hasn’t forgotten about gaming - Sherwood News
TOM: Nvidia issued a disappointing earnings report that beat expectations for earnings and revenue, and issued estimates higher than expected for next quarter. Why? Because data center revenue fell short of estimates for the second straight quarter. Overall company revenue rose 56% on the year, the ninth straight quarter of yearly growth over 50%. It sold no H20 chips to China last quarter, though it did sell some outside of China. And it did not include H20 sales to China in its estimates for next quarter, but believes it might be able to sell some if conditions prevail. NVIDIA's gaming division sales rose 49%, and its smaller robotics division rose 69%.
The company also said that the agreement to pay 15% of sales to China to the US government hasn't progressed beyond the early stages because the government hasn't indicated what regulations it will use to govern the payments. Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said that sales to China can still proceed even before the regulations are codified, because Nvidia has the licenses to sell to China. And Nvidia is joining Alphabet and Khosla Ventures in funding Commonwealth Fusion Systems to complete its demonstration of fusion energy.
Honor's slim Magic V5 foldable is fun to use, minus the huge camera bump | TechCrunch
Honor’s Magic V5 foldable almost feels too thin
HUYEN: Reviews are in for the Honor Magic V5 foldable as it goes on sale in Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. It's currently the thinnest foldable yet, at 8.88mm when folded, if you don't count the huge camera bump. It can't take the crown of thinnest when unfolded, because it's 4.1mm thick, which is half a millimeter thicker than the Huawei triple fold when unfolded. Otherwise, it's well-reviewed on its specs. The Honor Magic V5 sells at a starting price of £1,699.99/€1,999 for a 512GB version.
Apple Revokes EU Distribution Rights for Torrent Client, Developer Left in the Dark - TorrentFreak
TOM: Apple has revoked distribution rights for the iTorrent Client, which is distributed through AltStorePal in the EU. That's Apple blocking an app from a third-party store, not from its own App Store. Apple does not allow torrent apps in its own store, but the torrent client qBitControl remains unblocked. Apple has revoked the EU Alternative distribution functionality from iTorrent developer XITRIX's developer account. Apple has not explained the reason for the restriction to the developer or AltStorePAL.
Google's new Pixel Care+ plan includes free screen, battery repairs
HUYEN: The new Pixel 10 series is also getting good reviews for the functionality of its Gemini-powered features. And Google has launched a new after-purchase program called Pixel Care +, which replaces the previously less-snappily-named Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection in the US. Purchasers of the plan get unlimited claims for accidental or mechanical damage and pay nothing for screen and battery repairs. You can submit claims through the My Pixel app that arrived with the Pixel 10 series. Pixel Care+ for the regular Pixel 10 costs $9 per month or $179 for a two-year subscription. Different prices apply to different devices, but you can get it for the entire Pixel 8, 9 and 10 Series as well as the Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4, the Pixel Tablet, the Pixel Fold, and the Fitbit Ace LTE, Versa 4, Charge 6, Sense 2, and Inspire 3.
Samsung teases September 4 event, likely for Galaxy Tab S11 and Galaxy S25 FE
TOM: Samsung announced a "Galaxy Event" for next Thursday, September 4th, on Samsung's YouTube Channel, starting at 5:30 AM Eastern. The event will discuss multiple devices from “premium AI tablets to the newest member of the Galaxy S25 family.” Presumably, that last is the Galaxy S25 FE, aka Fan Edition, aka cheaper with lower specs edition.
HUYEN: A YouTube video from "Moore's Law Is Dead" claims to have some leaked specs on a forthcoming handheld version of the PlayStation. The channel has been reliable lately on PlayStation leaks, so it's worth noting. You should watch the video if you want all the specs, but the short version is that it's a dockable handheld that could outperform the Xbox ROG Ally X and possibly the PlayStation 5. Based on the specs, the channel estimates it will cost between $399 and $499.
Unpacking Passkeys Pwned: Possibly the most specious research in decades - Ars Technica
TOM: If you're seeing headlines about research from SquareX that claims to show how Passkeys can be stolen, I highly recommend you read Dan Goodin's article on Ars Technica that pokes holes in the research. Basically, SquareX compromised a browser with malware to trick users into creating a new passkey that it had access to. No existing passkeys could be accessed. As Goodin points out, that would also let the attacker compromise "TLS encryption and end-to-end encryption in messengers such as Signal—not to mention the security of SquareX services themselves."
Early blogging service Typepad is shutting down for good
HUYEN: And finally, a sad goodbye to an early blogging platform pioneer, Typepad. The company, which launched in October 2003, stopped accepting new customers in 2020, but continued to support existing customers. That support ends on September 30th. Existing customers must export their content by then. You can do that in Moveable Type Import format, which is compatible with WordPress.
TOM: Those are the essentials for today. Let’s dive a little deeper.

TOM:
Daman writes: Hey DTNS crew,
Tom has mentioned many times that Perplexity doesn’t really fit with Apple’s culture. I’ve seen this in many other news articles. What makes the two so different culturally? Maybe Apple acquiring Perplexity would be the exact thing that they need now.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
